THE LIMÓN DANCE COMPANY CELEBRATES THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIRTH OF ANNA SOKOLOW WITH TWO PERFORMANCES OF SOKOLOW AND LIMÓN.

MUSIC FOR SOKOLOW’S ‘ROOMS,’ WILL BE PERFORMED LIVE BY THE MANHATTAN SCHOOL OF MUSIC JAZZ DEPARTMENT, JUSTIN DICIOCCIO, CONDUCTOR.

THE LIMÓN DANCE COMPANY will celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the birth of great American choreographer ANNA SOKOLOW (born February 9, 1910) with performances of two seminal works in the modern dance repertory: Sokolow’s “Rooms,” which will be performed to live music by the Manhattan School of Music Jazz Department conducted by Justin DiCioccio; and José Limón’s “There is a Time,” works as relevant today as when they were created in the1950’s.

Performances are February 9 & 10, 8 PM, at the Baryshnikov Arts Cente.

The pairing of works by Sokolow and Limón comes naturally, as the contemporaries had a great mutual respect for one another and much in common. Both emerged from their companies (Limón from Humphrey/Weidman, and Sokolow from the Martha Graham Company) as major choreographers. They both taught at Juilliard and even shared concerts. Sokolow felt a great affinity for Mexico’s artistic community; she spent several years in Mexico and introduced to that country the choreography of its native José Limón , whose career began in the U.S.

“Rooms” was recently staged for the Limón Dance Company by Jim May, longtime Sokolow disciple and currently director of the Sokolow Theater/Dance Ensemble. Premiered in 1955, “Rooms” was regarded as revolutionary and controversial, in part because it was set to jazz music by Kenyon Hopkins, performed by a stellar ensemble of musicians that included Charles Mingus. Since its premiere, the dance has rarely been accompanied by live music, and the Limón Dance Company is particularly happy to partner for these performances with the Manhattan School of Music Jazz Department, conducted by Justin DiCioccio.

One of the most eloquent descriptions of “Rooms” appeared in The Modern Dance: Seven Statements of Belief, edited by Selma Jeanne Cohen: “In small rooms in large rooming houses throughout the world, people live out their dreams and fantasies, their fear and anxieties. In the hallways of life they pass without seeing, without hearing, without speaking, without touching.”

Following the Limón Dance Company’s performances of “Rooms” during its 2008 Joyce Theater season, Deborah Jowitt commented on the work’s “strength, integrity, and human insights.”

The program will be completed by Limón’s classic 1956 work “There is a Time,”a celebration of humanity and community, set to music by Norman dello Joio, staged and coached by Roxane D’Orleans Juste, longtime principal dancer and Associate Artistic Director of the Company.

The Limón Dance Company appeared for the first time in China in December 2009, where their repertory, including “There is a Time,” enjoyed a great success. 2010 will find the Company continuing to tour internationally with performances scheduled for Italy, Switzerland, and Mexico, in addition to U.S. and New York appearances.

“Rooms” and “There is a Time” were supported by a 2008 and a 2009 sponsorship from the American Express Foundation.
