He’s the shot in the arm for ballet companies seeking the next big thing.” The Times

Dance iconoclast launches world premiere

Multi award-winning Wayne McGregor is one of the world’s most inventive choreographers, renowned for his physically testing choreography and ground-breaking collaborations across dance, film, music, visual art, technology and science. During the past 18 months alone he has created work for Glastonbury Festival, Paris Opera Ballet and The Royal Ballet. He has directed an opera at La Scala, Milan and was appointed to the prestigious position of Resident Choreographer of The Royal Ballet, the first in 16 years and the only one ever to come from the world of contemporary dance.

His 2006 commission for The Royal Ballet, Chroma, stunned audiences, garnering such praise as; “within seconds of McGregor's Chroma it was clear the company had a winner, in what I swear must be the most electrifying opening of any ballet ever. The curtain rises on a dazzling white light-box, while from the pit a vertiginous blast of Bond-movie brass pins you to your seat. Out of the void step creatures that scarcely fit the human mould: sockets twist, spines duck and curve, heads butt or shudder…No movement is familiar, and familiar dancers are transformed” (Independent on Sunday).

At 22 McGregor founded his own company, Random Dance, recently retitled Wayne McGregor | Random Dance, which was invited to be the first resident company at the new Sadler’s Wells in 2001. His career to date has taken him beyond the conventional stage, choreographing for films such as Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, creating site specific installations for Southbank Centre’s The Hayward, The Saatchi Gallery, the Houses of Parliament and for the Pompidou Centre in Paris. Collaborations with artists outside of the dance field have included composers Sir John Tavener, Scanner, Plaid and Joby Talbot/The White Stripes, animatronics experts, Jim Henson’s Creature Workshop and neuro-scientists and heart-imaging specialists for his past two works for Random Dance, AtaXia and Amu. In 2007 he completed a three year project to build an inter-disciplinary artist’s retreat in the remote African island of Lamu.

On Thursday 10 April 2008 at Sadler’s Wells, the 38 year-old launched the world premiere of Entity (‘A great sexy beast of a piece’ The Sunday Times; ‘There is no other dance vocabulary like this’ The Guardian; ‘It looks like nothing on earth’ The Independent) a diptych of contrasting works and McGregor’s first production in two years for his own company, Wayne McGregor | Random Dance. Renowned for their fierce and visceral movement, ten of McGregor’s hyper-limber dancers move to the beat of two of the hottest new musical talents working today, Jon Hopkins and Joby Talbot. Joby Talbot (The Divine Comedy, Chroma) has written a propulsive string quartet which is pitched against the sonic extremes of Jon Hopkins’ (Massive Attack, Coldplay) melody led electronica. Linbury award-winning set designer Patrick Burnier has created a multi-screen installation for Entity, with film/video by Ravi Deepres, lit by the award-winning lighting designer Lucy Carter.

In 2008, McGregor continues to inform his ideas on the connection between mind and movement. During the creation of Entity and continuing as part of ongoing research into agents and augmentation, he and the dancers are working with R-Research coordinator Scott deLahunta alongside cognitive scientists and digital artists/programmers from various institutions including University of Cambridge, University College London, University of Sussex and the University of California San Diego. In January 2009, they travel to University of California San Diego to create a new piece of work under lab conditions; fueling the search for new creative processes on the part of McGregor and stimulating discoveries related to cognition, perception and action for the scientists.
