The Academy's flagship event is just around the corner and promises to be as exciting as ever! The city of Cape Town, South Africa, will host the Genée International Ballet Competition for the first time, from 6-9 October.

The Semi-finals are taking place on 6-7 October. The finalists will then compete on 9 October for the coveted gold, silver or bronze medal, as well as significant prize money. The live audience at the Final will also vote for their favourite candidate who will receive a special Audience Award.

The RAD also presents Sizodanisa (Let’s Dance!) on 5 October, a community dance project with ballet at centre stage, inspired by South Africa’s passion for dance and the multitude of dance groups learning in the Townships, as well as Genée Dance Challenge, a national competition for young dancers across South Africa, on 8 October.

Genée International Ballet Competition 2011 – Cape Town

The competition is presented by the RAD in association with the City of Cape Town and is supported by the University of Cape Town (UCT) and Cape Town City Ballet. It will be staged at Artscape, the city’s leading forum for the performing arts, with the Semi-finals taking place in the Theatre and the Final in the Opera House.

We are delighted to announce that David Nixon OBE, Artistic Director of Northern Ballet will chair the Judging Panel, joined by fellow Judges Professor Elizabeth Triegaardt, Executive Director of Cape Town City Ballet and Iain MacDonald, Artistic Director of South African Ballet Theatre. Finalists will compete for a coveted gold, silver or bronze medal, as well as significant prize money. The live audience at the Final will also vote for their favourite candidate who will receive a special Audience Award. Kirsten Isenberg, a South African choreographer, will create two exclusive variations (male and female) which will be premiered during the competition.

The RAD also presents Genée Dance Challenge, a national dance challenge for young dancers across South Africa on 8 October and Sizodanisa (Let’s Dance!), a community dance project with ballet at centre stage, inspired by the South Africa’s passion for dance and the multitude of dance groups learning in the Townships.
