JOINT BENEFIT CONCERT BY THE BERLINER PHILHARMONIKER AND THE STAATSKAPELLE BERLIN FOR UNICEF’S EMERGENCY FUND FOR JAPAN

In the Philharmonie in Berlin on Tuesday 29 March, Daniel Barenboim and Sir Simon Rattle conduct works by Tchaikovsky and Brahms. The concert will be broadcast live online in the Digital Concert Hall of the Berliner Philharmoniker.

Both the Berliner Philharmoniker and the Staatskapelle Berlin are regular guests in Japan. Following the devastating earthquake of 11 March, the two orchestras and their conductors Sir Simon Rattle and Daniel Barenboim are giving a benefit concert in the Berlin Philharmonie. Music fans all over the world will be able to follow the concert live at www.digital-concert-hall.com. All proceeds from the concert and the live webcast will go to UNICEF’s emergency fund for Japan. To open the concert, the Staatskapelle Berlin and Daniel Barenboim will perform Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony “Pathétique”. In addition to its concert activities, the Staatskapelle, whose history goes back to 1570, is the orchestra of the Staatsoper in Berlin. Daniel Barenboim has been general music director of the Staatskapelle since 1992.

In the second half of the concert, the Berliner Philharmoniker and their chief conductor Sir Simon Rattle will play Brahms’s Fourth Symphony. The Berliner Philharmoniker have had close ties to Japanese audiences ever since their first tour with Herbert von Karajan in 1957. The orchestra has been an international UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2007.

The Digital Concert Hall is the virtual concert venue of the Berliner Philharmoniker on the Internet. At www.digital-concert-hall.com the orchestra’s Berlin concerts are broadcast live, and are available as video streams in a video archive within a few days.
