The National Ballet of Canada & The Tutu Project: Celebrating 60 Years with 60 Tutus

The Tutu Project, a year-long project to create 60 original tutus for The National Ballet of Canada’s 60th anniversary, will culminate with exhibits at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts and the Design Exchange in Toronto. Created throughout the 2011/12 season, the entire collection will be on display, along with archival tutus, at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts for ticket holders, June 13 – 17, 2012.

The Design Exchange exhibit runs July 11 – September 2, 2012, in conjunction with an exhibit titled “60 Years of Designing the Ballet”, examining the past 60 years of design at the National Ballet.

About The Tutu Project

The 60 tutus were created by school children, Canadian fashion designers and artists as well as visitors to TIFF Kids International Film Festival, Toronto Fashion Week, Word on the Street, Toronto Pride, the Canada Day Celebrations in Ottawa, Share the Magic and Kids Corps.

The National Ballet of Canada and The Volunteer Committee are celebrating 60 years of partnership by engaging friends, audience members and professional designers from across the country in creating a collection of 60 original tutus. This interactive and international art and community-outreach project will include costumes from great moments in the company’s history and original pieces created by artists from Dance Victoria, The Port Theatre, Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Alberta Ballet, Giles Deacon for The English National Ballet, designers from the Fashion Design Council of Canada, our talented staff, and YOU!

In 2011, the Tutu Project hosted design opportunities for the public at Word On The Street Toronto, Toronto Pride, Culture Days, and the official Canada Day celebrations in Ottawa.

ABOUT THE DESIGN EXCHANGE

The Design Exchange (DX) is Canada’s only museum dedicated exclusively to the pursuit of design excellence and preservation of design heritage. At a crossroads of multiple disciplines from furniture and architecture to graphics and fashion, DX exhibitions and talks are curated to be culturally relevant and to reflect the popular zeitgeist. Located in downtown Toronto in the historic and original Toronto Stock Exchange building, the DX annually attracts thousands of visitors of all ages.
