Manhattan Movement & Arts Center, in association with sundance SELECTS, presents the opening screening of First Position on Friday, May 4, 2012 at 6:45pm at the Elinor Bunin Munroe Theater at Lincoln Center, 144 West 65th Street.

Follow in the inspirational footsteps of six talented ballet dancers (ages nine to nineteen) as they struggle to maintain form in the face of injury and personal sacrifice on their way to one of the most prestigious youth ballet competitions in the world. First Position is a feature length documentary about a love of dance and a drive to succeed that trumps money, politics and even war.

English National Ballet School is delighted to announce that it has appointed Samira Saidi as its new Director of Dance. Samira will be joining the school in August, following an illustrious career including twenty years dancing with Birmingham Royal Ballet and also tutor at Elmhurst School for Dance along with associations with many prestigious dance organisations within the UK.

The National Ballet of Canada & The Tutu Project: Celebrating 60 Years with 60 Tutus

The Tutu Project, a year-long project to create 60 original tutus for The National Ballet of Canada’s 60th anniversary, will culminate with exhibits at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts and the Design Exchange in Toronto. Created throughout the 2011/12 season, the entire collection will be on display, along with archival tutus, at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts for ticket holders, June 13 – 17, 2012.

This year’s edition of the famous festival “Hamburger Ballett-Tage” (Hamburg Ballet Days), set from June 17 to July 1, 2012, will not only present the second premiere of the season, inspired by a Japanese form of poetry and created by two young choreographers, but also a very special guest company: The San Francisco Ballet. In addition, the festival presents all repertoire highlights of the season 2011/2012 within its two weeks period.

Darcey Bussell: International Ballet Star to visit New Zealand

One of the world’s leading ballet stars, Darcey Bussell, is to visit New Zealand in June at the invitation of the New Zealand School of Dance and the Royal Academy of Dance. She will attend two events during her short visit, a fundraising dinner and auction and a coaching session with students from the New Zealand School of Dance.

Heralded by The Telegraph (UK) as "the first British dancer since Margot Fonteyn to become a household name", Darcey Bussell is one of the greatest English ballerinas of all time.

After 10 years following the same structure, an exciting new element and a change in format will be introduced for the 2012 Genée International Ballet Competition. The Genée underwent significant changes in 2002, the first year that it left London and travelled overseas, and so 2012 seemed a fitting time to update the competition once again, drawing on other new artistic initiatives across the Academy’s work.

De cabello muy rubio, llama poderosamente la atención la blancura casi transparente de su piel. Muy delgado y espigado, es una especie de ángel andrógino que, vestido completamente de negro, intensifica su palidez. Parece luminiscente. Y no en un sentido metafórico.

Atento a las personas que lo reconocen, las saluda con una leve sonrisa que acompaña con una mínima reverencia.

DRAMATURGIA, GESTUALIDAD, INTERPRETACIÓN: UN SISTEMA POR CONTRUIR EN LA DANZA CONTEMPORÁNEA

Dramaturgia, gestualidad, interpretación, son tres temas – aunque no los únicos- que atañen de manera directa a la danza contemporánea. Alcanzar una definición de cada uno, y luego establecer entre ellos un sistema estructural-funcional es tarea de todo coreógrafo en cada puesta en escena. Esta premisa es el objeto de análisis en este texto, a propósito de la vigésima edición de la muestra internacional Un Desierto para la Danza, realizada del 19 al 29 de abril pasados en Hermosillo, Sonora, noroeste de México.
