Exhibition Vaslav Nijinsky and John Neumeier in context of the 3rd International Festival “Diaghilev. P.S.” in St. Petersburg
From November 5th to December 12th the Foundation John Neumeier Dance Collection will present the exhibition “Vaslav Nijinsky and John Neumeier” in cooperation with the St. Petersburg State Museum of Theatre and Music. The curators John Neumeier, Hans-Michael Schäfer and Natalia Metelitsa will show more than a hundred pieces from Mr. Neumeiers private collection as well as from the Foundation John Neumeier.
The exhibition is designed by Holger Badekow and shows works by Nijinsky’s contemporaries such as Jean Cocteau, Gustav Klimt, Amadeo Modigliani, portraying Nijinsky in a number of roles. A highlight will be Nijinsky’s own drawings, which belong to the early abstractionist movement and illuminate different aspects of Nijinsky’s art.
Portraits of John Neumeier as a dancer and choreographer and pictures from his ballets by THE HAMBURG BALLET’s photographer Holger Badekow and others will form a part of the exhibition. Many reflect Neumeier’s long involvement with Nijinsky.
This year the 3rd International Festival “Diaghilev. P.S.” is dedicated to John Neumeier and his 40th anniversary as Ballet Director and Chief Choreographer in Hamburg. Among the highlights of the programme are two performances of THE HAMBURG BALLET at the Mikhailovsky Theatre showing John Neumeier’s ballet “Lady of the Camellias” on November 6th and 7th. Dancers from many leading ballet companies as well as THE HAMBURG BALLET, together with the NATIONAL YOUTH BALLET and members of the School of THE HAMBURG BALLET will take part in a very unique gala called “Neumeier Without Borders” on November 9th at the same theatre. In course of the Festival, a new book called “John Neumeier in St. Peterburg” by Russian author Natalia Zozulina will be presented and an international conference entitled “John Neumeier.
Aspects of Creative Work“ will be held.
