Miro Magloire presents his New Chamber Ballet in a program of two, as yet untitled, premieres, one by Magloire and one by guest dancer/choreographer Constantine Baecher, formerly with the Royal Danish Ballet, along with Lace and Moments, both by Magloire. February 15 & 16, 8 PM in the City Center Studio 5, 130 West 56 Street.

Guest dancer/choreographer Constantine Baecher was a member of the Royal Danish Ballet from 2003 to 2012, also choreographing dances for that company and for Cross Connection Ballet in Copenhagen. A frequent guest dancer/choreographer with New Chamber Ballet, the Boston native will premiere a new trio, Allow You To Look At Me, in which he will dance with company members joined by actor Jonathan Parks-Ramage.

Miro will also premiere a new dramatic duet set to music by Rebecca Saunders, a young British composer living in Berlin. Among Ms. Saunders many awards are the Busoni Prize of the Berlin Academy of the Arts, the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize for composition, and the Paul Hindemith Prize as part of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival. For the 2009-10 season she held the post of composer-in-residence at the Staatskapelle Dresden, and in 2010 she was composer-in-residence at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival.

From the repertory are two Magloire works: Lace, a women’s trio, and Moments, a duet for dancer and violinist. In her review of Lace, Deborah Jowitt noted that «whenever (one dancer) is performing a short solo, the other two sit on the floor in poses that call up images from Greek friezes. Also reminiscent of antique statues: the way they stand with one arm curved over their head. Their calmness is a nice contrast to the intricacies of the solos and (Luciano) Berio’s virtuosic Sequenza VIII for solo violin, which at times suggests an attack of gnats.» (Village Voice, February 2010). Moments, while billed as a solo, is actually a duet for dancer and violinist, performing Salvatore Sciarrino’s score on stage, alongside the dancer. The musician’s gestures, the whispering of the strings, and the dancer’s movements blend to form an intimate, rhapsodic duet for violin and dance.

CAROLINE CHIN, violinist, who makes her debut with New Chamber Ballet, was described in the Chicago Sun-Times as «…riveting and insightful, who lights up in passages of violin pyrotechnics.» Chin made her solo debut at the age of twelve, and has performed around the world as soloist and with symphony orchestras, including at the White House for their recent Christmas festivities. A regular member of two music groups: the Hudson Piano Trio and the string trio called Ensemble Epomeo, Caroline is known for her versatility, from being a promoter of new music to touring the U.S. and Japan with tap dancer Savion Glover.
